Mouse double clicking on its own
When single clicks open things twice or drag-and-drop lets go, a worn switch is the usual cause. Run the 20-click test above to confirm before changing anything.

Start with a quick test
Steps
- 1
Confirm with the test
Make 20 slow, deliberate clicks in the double-click test. Two or more phantom doubles means the switch is faulty.
- 2
Check the double-click setting
On Windows, open Settings › Bluetooth & devices › Mouse › Additional mouse settings and look at Double-click speed. A very slow setting can make separate clicks count as a double.
- 3
Discharge static
Unplug the mouse (remove batteries if wireless), then press each button 20–30 times. This sometimes helps a switch that builds up charge.
- 4
Blow out dust
Short bursts of compressed air into the gap around the button while clicking.
- 5
Raise debounce in the mouse app
Some gaming mouse apps let you set debounce time. A higher value hides chatter, though it doesn't repair the switch.
- 6
Warranty or replacement
Mouse switches wear out. Many makers replace mice within warranty; the test report above can support a claim.
Still not working?
- Test the mouse on another computer: if it double-clicks there too, it's the hardware.
