Webcam test
See your camera, measure what it really delivers, and get your lighting right before your next call.
How the test works
Requested vs delivered
We ask the camera for its highest resolution and then measure what actually arrives. Many built-in cameras advertise one number and deliver another, especially in dim light.
Measured frame rate
We count the frames the browser really receives over a few seconds, rather than trusting the number the camera reports.
Lighting score
Brightness, contrast and colour cast are read from a small, downscaled copy of each frame, in this tab. A bright window behind you is detected too.
Nothing leaves your device
The preview is drawn locally. Snapshots are created only when you press the button, and they download straight to your device.
What your results mean
1080p or 720p?
We classify by the shorter side of the image: 1080 pixels or more is 1080p, 720 or more is 720p. Video apps often send less than your camera delivers, depending on your connection.
Frame rate below 24 fps
Motion will look choppy. Cameras slow down to collect more light, so more light on your face is usually the fix.
Lighting score under 60
Your face is too dark, too bright, or tinted. Face a window or a lamp, and avoid bright light behind you.
Questions
Why is my webcam showing a black screen?
Check for a privacy shutter or a camera key on your laptop, close other apps that might be using the camera, and make sure the browser is allowed to use it in your system's privacy settings.
Is my webcam really 1080p?
This test shows the delivered resolution. If you see 720p from a camera sold as 1080p, try a different USB port (some cameras limit resolution on slower ports) and close other apps using it.
Does this test record me?
No. The video is processed only in this tab and never uploaded. A snapshot is created only when you click the button.
Can I compare two webcams?
Yes. Open Advanced and turn on side-by-side comparison to view a second camera next to the first.
