Keyboard double typing (key chatter)
Key chatter is when one press registers twice, usually because a switch is worn or dirty. The keyboard test above flags it automatically: watch for keys marked amber.

Start with a quick test
Steps
- 1
Confirm which key chatters
Type the suspect key slowly about 20 times in the test above. Chatter shows as amber and appears in the verdict.
- 2
Clean the switch
Unplug the keyboard. On mechanical keyboards, remove the keycap and blow compressed air into the switch while pressing it repeatedly.
- 3
Raise the debounce time
Many keyboard apps and custom firmware let you raise debounce time. Increase it a few milliseconds at a time.
- 4
Use Filter keys as a stop-gap
On Windows, Settings › Accessibility › Keyboard › Filter keys can ignore repeated keystrokes. It slows deliberate double letters too.
- 5
Replace the switch
Hot-swappable keyboards let you pull and replace a single switch. Others need soldering or a warranty repair.
Still not working?
- If many keys chatter at once, check the cable and USB port first: a flaky connection can repeat key events.
