"Camera in use by another application": how to fix it

Some cameras and drivers let only one app use the camera at a time. When another app has it, everything else gets an error or a black picture.

    See which app is using it

    Open Settings › Privacy & security › Camera. Apps currently or recently using the camera show Currently in use or a recent time.

    Close other apps using the camera

    Call apps, camera utilities and other browser tabs can hold the camera. Quit them, including from the system tray or menu bar, then try again.

    Check the system tray

    Call apps like Teams, Zoom and Skype keep running in the tray after you close their window. Right-click their tray icons and quit.

    Restart

    A restart releases devices that an app has frozen and reloads drivers. It fixes more problems than it should.

  • Camera utilities from webcam makers can hold the camera permanently. Close or uninstall them to test.
