Screen flickering

Flicker can come from the signal, the driver, the panel's brightness control or a single app. Check the refresh rate above and note when the flicker happens.

  1. 1

    See if one app causes it

    Open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc). If Task Manager flickers too, it's likely the display driver; if it doesn't, an app is likely the cause.

    Restart the graphics driver

    Press Windows+Ctrl+Shift+B. The screen goes black briefly while the driver restarts.

    Update the graphics driver

    Get the latest driver from your GPU or laptop maker.

  4. 4

    Check the cable and refresh rate

    Reseat or replace the cable, and set a refresh rate the monitor supports.

  5. 5

    Try turning off variable refresh

    G-SYNC, FreeSync or Windows' variable refresh can flicker at low frame rates on some panels.

  • Flicker that shows up in photos of the screen but isn't visible can be normal backlight dimming.
