Microphone not working on Mac

macOS asks each app for permission before it can use the microphone, so a missing permission is the most common cause. Test above, then follow the steps.

Begin met een snelle test

Stappen

  1. 1

    Allow microphone access

Open System Settings › Privacy & Security › Microphone and switch on your browser or app. If it isn't listed, it hasn't asked yet: try the test again and allow the prompt.

  2. 2

Pick the right input and level

Open System Settings › Sound and select the Input tab. Choose your microphone and drag Input volume towards the right. The level meter should move when you speak.

  3. 3

    Check browser site settings

In Safari, choose Safari › Settings › Websites › Microphone and set this site to Allow. In Chrome, use the site controls icon next to the address bar.

  4. 4

    Watch out for Bluetooth headsets

If AirPods or another Bluetooth headset is connected, macOS may use its microphone. Choose the mic you want in Sound › Input.

  5. 5

    Quit apps holding the mic

An orange dot in the menu bar shows an app is using the microphone. Open Control Center to see which one, and quit it if it shouldn't be.

  6. 6

    Restart

A restart releases devices that an app has frozen and reloads drivers. It fixes more problems than it should.

Werkt het nog steeds niet?

  • Test the built-in microphone with Voice Memos. If it records, the problem is app-specific.
  • Check for macOS updates in **System Settings › General › Software Update**.
  • If the built-in mic is silent everywhere, contact Apple Support: it may need service.
