On Windows 10, a silent microphone is usually blocked by privacy settings or set as the wrong input. Run the test above, then follow the steps until the level moves when you speak.

- 1
Check for a mute switch
Look for a mute switch on your headset cable or ear cup, and a microphone key on your laptop's top row.
- 2
Allow microphone access
Open Settings › Privacy › Microphone. Under Allow access to the microphone on this device, make sure it says on. Turn on Allow apps to access your microphone and Allow desktop apps to access your microphone.
- 3
Pick the right input and level
Open Settings › System › Sound. Under Input, choose your microphone, select Device properties and raise Volume. Speak and watch the Test your microphone bar.
- 4
Match the app's input
In Zoom, Teams, Discord or your game, open audio settings and choose the same microphone.
- 5
Turn off exclusive mode
Open Settings › System › Sound › Sound Control Panel. On Recording, double-click your mic, open Advanced and clear Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device.
- 6
Reinstall the audio driver
Right-click Start and open Device Manager. Expand Audio inputs and outputs, right-click your device and choose Uninstall device, then restart. Windows reinstalls the driver automatically.
- 7
Restart
A restart releases devices that an app has frozen and reloads drivers. It fixes more problems than it should.

- Test the microphone on another device to rule out a hardware fault.
- For 3.5 mm headsets on PCs with separate pink and green jacks, use a splitter so the microphone goes into the pink input.
- Install the audio driver from your PC or motherboard maker's support page.
